Story context & connections · contains spoilers
El Maíz has a supernatural talent for cultivation. Plants flourish under their care, and their magic can raise entire fields of crops from suitable soil.
The growth consumes the nutrients in that soil. A productive harvest leaves the ground depleted, so sustained cultivation depends on restoring what the plants have taken.
