Story context & connections · contains spoilers

An El Árbol can turn their skin to bark. The change gives the body a hard protective layer while leaving the person able to move and act. Árboles can also regenerate from injuries and draw nourishment from sunlight through photosynthesis.

They can develop Stat Sight, one of the gifts shared by Plant Souls. Its appearance varies. One Árbol bartender sees age as rings of golden light within a person's chest. Elmer, a bouncer at Mundo's club, sees a number floating above the head. Both can recognize something that a face or identity card might conceal.

Lena learns she is an Árbol when friends from her AlterNet group arrive at her home. Elmer uses his sight at work, where an apparently young patron turns out to be nearly two thousand years old. The bartender puts barkskin to a more direct use when he helps David Wight discover his Soldado ability.
