THE MOMENT
"Witchcraft!" a sour old woman yelled. Gwen laughed at her and the rest of the townsfolk around her. They surrounded the bonfire and stake that Gwen was tied to. Though, she felt her bonds loosening as the fire chewed on the ropes. Gwen herself was covered in flames and still laughing. Her fair skin and even her dark locks remained unburned by the flames enveloping her.
"Yeah, that's the point," Gwen smiled. "I told you, fire is my ally. It won't harm me."
"She consorts with the devil!" the old woman yelled. Gwen laughed and rolled her eyes.
"He wishes," she said. "Look, it's been fun and I'm not holding anything against you but...," Gwen struggled with all her strength. She managed to pull the burned ropes apart to free herself. Despite her ability to withstand fire, there wasn't much magical or special about Gwen. She wasn't an actual witch but she enjoyed giving the townsfolk a hard time. She was a relatively normal young woman with no idea how she is able to touch fire.
"...time for me to go." Gwen took a step off the pyre.
"Stop her!" one of the guards yelled. Two men rushed forward, but she was still flaming. They paused awkwardly on either side of her. Gwen continued to walk and they walked with her trying to keep her boxed in without getting too close to the flames.
"Oh for god's sake," the guard that issued the order sighed. He dashed to the well for a bucketful of water, then ran back and doused Gwen; she screamed. For the first time in her life she realized that she'd never so much as bathed. As far back as she could remember she'd never felt the need to. The water scarred her skin with horrible burns as she threw herself to the ground in pain.
"So, fire does nothing but water on the other hand...," The guard commented as two men picked Gwen up from the ground. "Take her to the lake."
