THE MOMENT
"Yer a pair o' strappin' lads!" the old guide smiled at Rigel and Xap as they approached. The guide was an aged town guard standing at the dead end of an alley with five colored doors lined up behind him. The doors weren't attached to the wall and stood upright, supported by nothing. "Come to try your luck against the Court of Spiders?"
"I'm headed to Arachnos." Xap waved at Rigel and headed for the green door on the far left. It had a globe etched on it, and it was labeled 'Arachnos'.
"We just got here? What if the rules changed?" Rigel asked. Xap shrugged and kept moving.
"Then, I'll figure it out as I go," he said. He'd reached the door and turned the handle. It opened inward, and he walked in without hesitation. Then, the door closed behind him.
"That's no fun." Rigel shook his head. "I'm here to defeat the Court of Spiders," he told the prospector in a brave voice.
"Just in time, lad!" The prospector nodded. "We have 31 days to drive back the Court of Spiders. They're gathering their assault forces behind these very doors.”
“How can I help fend off the Court of Spiders?” Rigel asked.
“Choose a door and enter it to visit their realm. They will detect you and send more and stronger minions to stop you. You must survive until you can defeat the Court Member. They're color-coded according to our estimation of their strength.” The prospector gestured at the green door.
“Arachnos guards the green door, and you'll find he's weak to fire.”
“Oh yeah?!” Rigel grinned. That was a new rule this year. “Do the others have weaknesses too?!”
“Yer an eager one,” the old man chuckled, but nodded. “I was getting to that. Next challenge level is the red door, guarded by Georgia Glass. You’ll find she’s weak to water.”
“Ohh.” Rigel spotted the pattern easily enough. “The guardian of the orange door is weak to.. wind, then?” he asked. It was a bit of a leap because ‘Orange’ wasn’t in the elemental wheel, but the other weaknesses were accounted for.
“You must be some kind of genius,” the prospector nodded. “J.J. is the guardian of the orange door, and the wind element does extra damage to her. The blue door is guarded by D.D.; she's weak to earth.”
“What's D. D.’s full name?” Rigel asked. He had no idea who she was.
“Darlene Darwin; she's a firecracker,” the prospector replied.
“No idea,” Rigel commented to himself with a shrug. Then he got back on topic. “So what's Spider weak to?” he asked. He doubted the head of the Court of Spiders had been replaced. He was behind the gold door; it was the most challenging trial.
“Spider is an elite combatant, even among the Courts. You’ll find that guardian has no weaknesses,” the prospector said. Rigel couldn’t resist a little fun; it paid off sometimes. He opened his eyes wide at the old man.
“No weaknesses!? That sounds impossible!” The prospector laughed and shook his head.
“Just because it has no weaknesses doesn’t mean it’s invincible,” he said. “You just have to work for it. But, yer a brave lad. Here, this’ll help you work up to it. We need all the help we can get.” He offered Rigel a small leather pouch, and the boy accepted it with a smile. As soon as he did, he gained a small sum of event points in the top corner of his view.

“Wish me luck, good sir!” Rigel waved as he headed toward the red door. “I’ll keep the Court of Spiders at bay and protect the town!”
