THE MOMENT

"I don't think this is it," Dion peered down into the well and shook his head. The well wasn't overly deep and the sun was still out; he could clearly see two corpses in the water with a possible third beneath them.

"Quests in the AlterNet are procedurally generated to make use of anything available nearby. You picked up the quest around here, this is probably the well you're looking for," she giggled. "And, for the record, you could have just checked in the time it took me to explain that to you. If it's not the right one we'll move on."

"Oh, right," Dion nodded and tugged on the rope to bring up the bucket. After one yank it moved on its own until a bucket of black, dirty sludge rose up. Once it reached the top, the bucket began to glow with a faint golden outline to attract his attention. "It's the right one!" he said. Then, he hesitated.

"Well... finish it," Ophelia encouraged him.

"...I don't know which one? Sword or shield?" he asked.

"Did you ever play any games before you discovered the AlterNet?" Ophelia giggled.

"Not really...," Dion shook his head.

"It doesn't matter which you choose, it's a temporary buff that'll wear off. You'll probably want to try a few varying combinations before the tournament anyway. So, pick one, try it out, then you can make different choices next time."

"Oh, yeah, okay," Dion nodded. He'd been so concerned with wanting to make the right choice that he didn't bother to look at how unimportant the choice itself was. "I guess I'll try the sword for now," he drew his sword and dipped the tip into the bucket of black ooze. A black shadow clung to the blade and climbed up to the hilt.

[Black Edge] The buff appeared in his vision along with a 60-minute timer.

"Oh, nice," Dion grinned. "Extra Minor damage against Living creatures sounds handy."

"Let's go try it out," Ophelia wiggled her fingers and a tall black portal opened in the air next to them. But, she was curious about something as they departed.

"It was the only Well around and not that hard to find...," she said. "Why were you so convinced it was the wrong one?"

"I don't know...," Dion shrugged. "The quest text said the well is 'Filled with the bodies of those that dared to drink from it," he chuckled. "I thought there'd be more corpses than that."

"Why?" Ophelia giggled. "How many corpses would it take to put you off of drinking it?"
