THE MOMENT
“I found the cause,” Monica smiled with a nod. “... and you’ll never guess what it was.”
“Then, the frequent unnatural attempts at spellcasting was… not related to the Uni-Court?” Bijou asked. Monica had been sent to investigate the unusual magical activity because she was already tracking some enemies with profoundly powerful magic.
“Not at all,” Monica shook her head. “We likely wouldn't have noticed it if we weren't already checking every unexplained spurt of magic.”
“So what was the problem?” Bijou asked. She got the sense it wasn't remotely urgent and relaxed a bit.
“An Earth just reached their agentic era and they've got the bots scraping through the first internet they built. I traced it to a single incident of a bot scraping through someone's digitally stored grimoire. It led to people trying to vibe code the spells without understanding any of the magical framework behind it.”
“Oh, I see,” Bijou nodded. She understood what happened and it wasn't anything that would've been noteworthy on its own. “I'm tempted to think maybe we are being too cautious,” she shook her head. “But we can't afford to change course now. This is likely a frequent occurrence we've never bothered to identify before. Pass the data on to Dara so we can ignore similar happenings in the future. And the pattern is easy enough to spot. Repeated casting attempts that try to invoke magic without actually being able to cast at all. It's a good thing most agents don't have the necessary soul to work magic with. And it's probably a lucky bonus most of the humans don't grasp the principles either, making them just as ineffective.”
“Most of the people trying spells don't even know magic is real,”Monica giggled. “They just think they're role-playing. The original owner still has no idea it was her grimoire that kicked it off.”
“Great job. After reporting to Dara, get on over to Toku-high and get familiar with the school.”
“On it,” Monica waved on her way out of the office.
