THE MOMENT

"Hold on," Parker wasn't prepared for the situation at all. "Are you serious?" He asked Perseus. The handsome man in a white blazer and red tie was his boss's boss and visited Parker in his office. He took a client's seat in front of Parker and introduced himself formally before dropping the news. "Am I even qualified to be a Field Agent?" he asked.

Parker was a 38-year-old adult with the imagination of a child. He readily accepted there were things he didn't know about and was open to almost any idea. His curiosity, open-mindedness, and most of all work ethic landed him in a high-level government position that led to him learning about the multiverse. It started off innocuously enough with seeing the name 'Sharp Development' more and more on official files. He asked the right questions and did the right jobs to be considered for one of the positions that worked with the company directly. Once he learned they were a multiversal organization, he made it his mission to be involved. Parker thought it would be awesome working for a secret government agency against world-ending extra-dimensional threats.

The best he'd managed so far was as a file clerk, but he still did his best. Even so, now that he had an opportunity to work with insurance claims, doubts started to grow. It was one thing to have a vague idea of what a 'world-ending threat' might entail and imagine a whole heroic adventure around defeating it. It was quite another to face an endless stack of papers every day, billions of faces tied to a single tragedy. After stamping 'Deceased' on millions of little Suzies and Tommies, Parker lost interest in Field Agent work. He wasn't that kind of hero who could stare down the monsters capable of destroying entire Earths. He was just some guy who worked hard.

"It's not much different from your current job," Perseus nodded with a friendly grin. "You just get to leave the office more," he added.

"But.. I'm not even a Unique Soul," Parker shook his head.

"I know," Perseus chuckled, and his eyes lit up with golden stars to inform Parker of his Abilities. "I'm an Estrella," he said, and the stars faded. "I see you're a normal human, but you've been doing excellent work as a normal human already."

"But, I don't have any powers, I wouldn't be able to stop a Calavera or anything like that...," Parker said. Perseus nodded with a smile.

"That's kind of understood with the 'normal human' aspect," he said. "No one's asking you to."

"But.. isn't that what Field Agents do? They fight back extra-dimensional threats that might end the world??"

"No," it was a simple, friendly, direct answer. "It's like I said, essentially the same job, just surveying the damage out in the field, on the actual Earths. You're kind of sheltered here in the office, but if you accept the position, you'll be going out into the field. I want to make sure you know,... that kind of thing can't be stopped. No one is expecting you to fight a Calavera, because we're not trying to stop anything. You've been handling insurance claims this whole time... didn't you ever consider the fact that insurance only pays out after the disaster?"
